Leonida is Rockstar's fictional take on Florida, nicknamed the "Goodtime State" in official copy. Rockstar's site splits it into six regions, from a neon city on the Atlantic coast to swamps, islands, a faded Gulf town, sugar country and forested hills in the north.

Below is what Rockstar has said about each, in our own words, plus the real-world places press have compared them to. Region art on this page is original SixStars artwork, not Rockstar's.

Vice City

Neon art deco hotels on a beach boulevard at night

Decades after the '80s, Vice City is still America's capital of sun and fun, packed with glamour, hustle and greed. Rockstar names Ocean Beach (pastel art-deco hotels and white sand), Little Cuba and its bakeries, the Tisha-Wocka flea market with its knock-off brands, and the VC Port, billed as the cruise-ship capital of the world.

Other official names include the Stockyard neighbourhood (compared by press to Miami's Wynwood), Southside Vice City, Washington Beach and Watson Bay.

  • Inspired by: Miami (reported)
  • Where: the southeast, on the Atlantic coast (reported)

Leonida Keys

A highway bridge between palm-covered islands at golden hour

A laid-back chain of tropical islands, full of bars and casual living, next to some of America's most beautiful and most dangerous waters. Rockstar sells it as the gateway to paradise. Jason drifted here after the Army, and Keys smuggler Brian Heder lets him live rent-free in one of his properties.

  • Inspired by: the Florida Keys (reported)
  • Where: south of Vice City, running out to sea (reported)

Grassrivers

An airboat in sawgrass wetlands at sunset

Leonida's untamed wetlands. Alligators are the famous residents, but Rockstar hints at deadlier predators and stranger discoveries in the mangroves. One official screenshot shows stilt houses with the Vice City skyline in the distance, so the two sit close together.

  • Inspired by: the Everglades (reported)
  • Where: next to Vice City (official), probably to its west or southwest (reported)

Port Gellhorn

A faded port town with cranes and an old neon motel

Leonida's "forgotten coast". Once a popular holiday town, it's now cheap motels, closed attractions and empty strip malls, running on malt liquor, painkillers and truck-stop energy drinks. It's also dirt-bike country.

  • Inspired by: Florida's Panhandle and Gulf coast (reported)
  • Where: the northwest, on the Gulf side (reported)

Ambrosia

A sugar refinery beside cane fields at sunset

The industrial heart of Leonida, in the middle of the state. The Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides the jobs, and a local biker gang provides most everything else.

  • Inspired by: the sugar country around Lake Okeechobee (reported)
  • Where: central Leonida (official)

Mount Kalaga National Park

Misty forested hills and a lake at sunrise

A national park on the state's northern border, known for hunting, fishing and off-road trails, and home to backwoods mystics and anti-government types. Florida has no mountains, so outlets compare the terrain to the southern Appalachians.

  • Where: the far north of Leonida (official)

How big is Leonida?

Rockstar North's Rob Nelson told press that the map is about twice the size of GTA V's and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's. He also said Vice City alone is about twice the size of Los Santos. There's no official square-kilometre or square-mile figure.

Where's the official map?

Rockstar hasn't released a digital map. The only official full map announced so far is printed on the back of a double-sided souvenir poster in the $399.99 Goodtime State collector's box, which ships on November 19. Many "full maps" online are fan-made, and some use leaked material, so we don't use them.
