The wait for a first look is over. Rockstar Games released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI on the evening of December 4, 2023 (Eastern Time), confirming the name, introducing its two leads and announcing a return to Vice City. Released early after a leak

The trailer wasn't meant to arrive yet. Rockstar had set the premiere for Tuesday, December 5 at 9 a.m. ET, but after the video leaked online, the studio published it the evening before.

It capped a long build-up. In February 2022, Rockstar said active development of the next Grand Theft Auto was "well underway". On November 8, 2023, Rockstar's Sam Houser confirmed the first trailer would land in early December, timed to the company's 25th anniversary, and on December 1 Rockstar locked in the date.

What the trailer confirmed

  • The title: Grand Theft Auto VI.
  • Two leads: Lucia and Jason. Rockstar's official profiles, published alongside Trailer 2 in May 2025, give their full names: Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval.
  • The setting: Vice City, inside the fictional state of Leonida.
  • A release window: "Coming 2025", on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • The music: Tom Petty's "Love Is a Long Road" plays over the trailer.

A record-breaking debut

The response was immediate. Guinness World Records confirmed that Trailer 1 drew 90,421,491 YouTube views in 24 hours, the most for any video game trailer in its first day. It also set records as the most-liked game trailer in 24 hours, with 8.9 million likes, and as the most-viewed non-music YouTube video in its first day.

Within about two days it had passed roughly 101 million views, overtaking the lifetime views of Grand Theft Auto V's 2011 reveal trailer, according to Video Games Chronicle. By August 26, 2026, Game Informer reported the video at almost 290 million YouTube views.

What it didn't say

The first reveal gave a year, not a date, and no price. Nearly three years later, some of the big questions have answers and others still don't:

  • The date is now November 19, 2026, and prices start at $79.99.
  • PC still hasn't been announced.
  • GTA VI is sold as a single-player experience, with no online mode announced.
