GTA 6 Online: what we know about multiplayer so far
Does GTA 6 have online multiplayer? Not at launch: it's sold as a single-player game and no GTA 6 Online has been announced. Here's what is confirmed, what's rumour and what happens to GTA Online.

GTA 6 has no online multiplayer at launch, and no "GTA 6 Online" has been announced. Rockstar and Take-Two sell Grand Theft Auto VI as "a single-player experience", and the store listings agree. This guide separates what's confirmed from what's rumour, and explains what happens to today's GTA Online.
What's confirmed
- Take-Two's pre-order announcement (June 24, 2026) calls GTA VI "a single-player experience".
- The Xbox Store lists it as "Single player". The PlayStation Store lists 1 player and "Offline play only".
- None of the Standard or Ultimate Edition content mentions online play.
What happens to GTA Online
Today's GTA Online runs on GTA V, and it isn't going away when GTA VI arrives:
- At its September 2026 shareholder meeting, Take-Two said it will continue to support GTA Online after GTA VI's release and beyond.
- Digital pre-orders of GTA VI come with one free month of GTA+, Rockstar's subscription for GTA Online and the GTA+ Games Library. It doesn't do anything in GTA VI. Read our GTA+ guide to make the most of it.
Rumours and hints
Two other things often get mentioned:
- Valentina, a fixer seen in the Extended Look, has been identified by fans as the Valentina from GTA Online's 2025 Money Fronts update. Rockstar hasn't confirmed it, and it says nothing about a GTA VI online mode. More in our Valentina wiki entry.
- History: GTA Online launched on October 1, 2013, two weeks after GTA V. Rockstar hasn't said it will repeat that pattern.
Does GTA 6 need an internet connection?
The PlayStation Store lists the game as "Offline play only". You'll still need to be online to buy, download and pre-load a digital copy, and the boxed edition contains a download code, not a disc. Rockstar hasn't published any other online requirements.
What to expect at launch
On November 19, 2026, plan for a story-driven single-player game with two leads, Jason and Lucia. If you want to play with friends that week, GTA Online on current consoles is the place to do it.
